Empowering communities in Northeast Nigeria through awareness, care, and support to eradicate Sickle Cell Disease for generations to come.
Sickle Cell Disease Eradication Initiative (SCDEI) is a Not-for-Profit Organization dedicated to creating an empowered society free of Sickle Cell Disease. Operating in Yobe State—which has one of the highest rates of sickle cell trait in the world—our mission is to provide communities with the knowledge, services, and skills needed for a healthier future.
We provide vital health education to communities, emphasizing the importance of pre-marital genotype testing and counseling to stop the cycle of inheritance.
A core objective is to establish dedicated blood banks for SCD patients, ensuring they have access to safe and timely transfusions during health crises.
Our interventions are guided by data. We conduct research and use tools like Kobo Toolbox to understand the scope of SCD and measure our impact effectively.
We strengthen the healthcare system by training community volunteers and working with healthcare providers to improve the diagnosis, management, and care for SCD patients.
We work to empower patients, families, and caregivers with psycho-social support and skills for economic self-sustenance.
Sickle Cell Disease is a significant global health issue, and Nigeria bears the largest burden in the world, with approximately 150,000 babies born with the disorder annually. The situation is particularly critical in Yobe State, which records a prevalence of 32.6%—the highest in the nation.
This genetic disorder places an immense strain on patients and their families. The challenge is magnified by:
We have successfully registered over 500 sickle cell disease patients in the Damaturu Local Government Area, creating a crucial database for targeted support.
We've built strong collaborations with key stakeholders, including the Yobe State Ministry of Health and the Primary Healthcare Management Board, to maximize our reach.
We organized the 2021 World Sickle Cell Day, conducting a health awareness rally to educate the public and combat stigma associated with the disease.
We've successfully recruited and trained a dedicated team of community volunteer focal persons to lead outreach and data collection efforts at the grassroots level.
